Juicy, flavorful sloppy joe filling made with ground beef, onions, peppers, and a tangy sauce is sandwiched between buttery toasted bread and melty cheddar cheese. It’s a fun, hearty twist on two classic favorites—perfect for family dinners or game day!
Ingredients
-
1 pound lean ground beef
-
½ medium onion, chopped
-
¼ cup chopped green pepper
-
⅔ cup ketchup
-
1½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
-
1 teaspoon ground mustard
-
½ teaspoon garlic powder
-
⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
-
8 slices Texas toast or hearty white bread
-
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
-
4 tablespoons butter
Instructions
-
Cook the Filling:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, chopped onion, and green pepper until beef is browned and vegetables are soft. Drain any excess fat if needed. -
Add Sauce:
Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Remove from heat. -
Assemble Sandwiches:
Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices, buttered side down, on a griddle or skillet. Layer each with shredded cheddar, a generous scoop of sloppy joe mixture, and more cheddar. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up. -
Grill:
Cook over medium heat until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3–4 minutes per side. Press slightly with a spatula to help the sandwich hold together. - Serve:
Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with chips, pickles, or a simple salad.
Notes
-
For extra cheesy sandwiches, add a slice of American or provolone in addition to shredded cheddar.
-
Swap Texas toast for sourdough or rye for a different flavor.
- Make the filling ahead and store in the fridge for quick assembly later.
