Description

Grilled Cheese Sloppy Joes are the ultimate comfort food mashup. Juicy, flavorful sloppy joe filling made with ground beef, onions, peppers, and a tangy sauce is sandwiched between buttery toasted bread and melty cheddar cheese. It’s a fun, hearty twist on two classic favorites—perfect for family dinners or game day!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean ground beef

  • ½ medium onion, chopped

  • ¼ cup chopped green pepper

  • ⅔ cup ketchup

  • 1½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ⅛ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)

  • 8 slices Texas toast or hearty white bread

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 4 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  • Cook the Filling:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, chopped onion, and green pepper until beef is browned and vegetables are soft. Drain any excess fat if needed.

  • Add Sauce:
Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, ground mustard, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened. Remove from heat.

  • Assemble Sandwiches:
Butter one side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices, buttered side down, on a griddle or skillet. Layer each with shredded cheddar, a generous scoop of sloppy joe mixture, and more cheddar. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.

  • Grill:
Cook over medium heat until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, about 3–4 minutes per side. Press slightly with a spatula to help the sandwich hold together.

  • Serve:
Let cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm with chips, pickles, or a simple salad.

Notes

  • For extra cheesy sandwiches, add a slice of American or provolone in addition to shredded cheddar.

  • Swap Texas toast for sourdough or rye for a different flavor.

  • Make the filling ahead and store in the fridge for quick assembly later.
