Ingredients
Scale
Proteins
- 1 lb lean or medium ground beef
Vegetables & Aromatics
- 1 lb Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved
- 2 cloves garlic, freshly minced
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
Oils & Sauces
- 1 tablespoon vegetable or canola oil (for sautéing)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari/coconut aminos for gluten-free)
- 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
Seasonings
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes for heat
Instructions
- Prepare the Brussels Sprouts: Trim the stems from the Brussels sprouts and slice them in half lengthwise to ensure even cooking and preserve their crunchy texture.
- Brown the Ground Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef, break it apart with a spatula, and cook until no longer pink and beginning to brown for rich flavor.
- Sauté Aromatics: Add freshly minced garlic and ginger to the skillet with the beef and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant, infusing the dish with vibrant, savory aromas.
- Cook Brussels Sprouts: Add the halved Brussels sprouts to the skillet and stir to combine. Let them cook undisturbed for a couple of minutes to develop a slight char, then stir occasionally until tender-crisp, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add Seasonings and Finish: Pour in soy sauce and drizzle toasted sesame oil over the mixture. Toss everything together and season with salt, pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Cook for another 2 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from heat, sprinkle with sliced green onions, and serve immediately with your choice of sides or enjoy on its own.
Notes
- Don’t overcrowd the pan; cook Brussels sprouts in batches if needed to get a nice sear.
- Use fresh garlic and ginger for brighter, more vibrant flavors.
- Choose ground beef with about 85% lean content for a good balance of flavor without greasiness.
- Cook on medium-high heat to lock in freshness and prevent sogginess.
- Add toasted sesame oil near the end to preserve its nutty essence without burning.
- Frozen Brussels sprouts can be used but should be thawed and well-drained to avoid excess moisture.
- For gluten-free, substitute soy sauce with tamari or coconut aminos.
