Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups warm water
- ¼ cup sugar
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons yeast (active dry or instant)
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 3 tablespoons softened butter
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, then add the yeast. Let the mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the yeast becomes foamy.
- Once the yeast mixture is ready, add the salt, softened butter, and 3 cups of flour. Stir until the mixture begins to come together.
- Gradually add the remaining flour, ¼ cup at a time, mixing after each addition, until the dough becomes difficult to stir.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a loaf pan.
- Punch down the risen dough to release the air, then shape it into a loaf and place it in the prepared pan.
- Cover the pan with a towel and let the dough rise for another 30 minutes, or until it has risen slightly above the top of the pan.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown on top and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then remove it from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- Make sure the water temperature is warm, not too hot, to ensure the yeast activates properly (between 100°F-110°F).
- For a richer flavor, brush the top of the loaf with melted butter right after baking.
- You can add herbs or garlic to the dough for a flavored variation.
