Description
Creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet—this homemade KFC-style coleslaw is the perfect side dish for fried chicken, barbecue, or sandwiches. With a smooth, flavorful dressing and finely chopped cabbage, it tastes just like the restaurant classic, if not better.
Ingredients
-
1 tablespoon onion, finely grated
-
1/3 cup granulated sugar
-
1/2 cup mayonnaise
-
1/4 cup buttermilk, well shaken
-
1/4 cup whole milk
-
1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar
-
2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
-
1/2 teaspoon salt
-
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
-
8 cups finely diced cabbage (or 1 16-ounce bag of coleslaw mix)
-
1/4 cup shredded carrot (omit if using a pre-mixed bag)
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, mayonnaise, buttermilk, milk, vinegar, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper until smooth and well combined.
-
Add finely diced cabbage, grated onion, and shredded carrot (if using).
-
Toss everything together until the cabbage is fully coated in the dressing.
-
Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to let the flavors develop and the coleslaw soften.
- Stir well before serving.
Notes
-
For best results, dice the cabbage very finely for that authentic KFC texture.
-
Coleslaw can be made a day ahead and keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Adjust sugar and vinegar to taste depending on your sweetness preference.
