Description

Creamy, tangy, and slightly sweet—this homemade KFC-style coleslaw is the perfect side dish for fried chicken, barbecue, or sandwiches. With a smooth, flavorful dressing and finely chopped cabbage, it tastes just like the restaurant classic, if not better.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon onion, finely grated

  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise

  • 1/4 cup buttermilk, well shaken

  • 1/4 cup whole milk

  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white vinegar

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

  • 8 cups finely diced cabbage (or 1 16-ounce bag of coleslaw mix)

  • 1/4 cup shredded carrot (omit if using a pre-mixed bag)

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, mayonnaise, buttermilk, milk, vinegar, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper until smooth and well combined.

  • Add finely diced cabbage, grated onion, and shredded carrot (if using).

  • Toss everything together until the cabbage is fully coated in the dressing.

  • Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to let the flavors develop and the coleslaw soften.

  • Stir well before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, dice the cabbage very finely for that authentic KFC texture.

  • Coleslaw can be made a day ahead and keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days.

  • Adjust sugar and vinegar to taste depending on your sweetness preference.
