Description

This classic apple crisp recipe is a warm, comforting dessert featuring spiced apples topped with a deliciously buttery and crunchy oat topping. Perfect for any season, but especially for cozy autumn nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Spiced Apples:

    • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used, can also be sliced)

    • 2 tbsp granulated sugar

    • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon

    • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice

  • For the Crisp Topping:

    • 1 cup light brown sugar

    • 3/4 cup old-fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but it may have a slightly different texture)

    • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour

    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

    • Pinch of kosher salt

    • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  • Prepare the apples: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, toss the chopped apples with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice until they are well-coated. Transfer the apples to a greased 9×9-inch baking dish.

  • Make the crisp topping: In a separate bowl, combine the light brown sugar, oats, all-purpose flour, ground cinnamon, and kosher salt. Stir well to combine. Add the cold, diced butter to the mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture becomes crumbly.

  • Assemble the crisp: Evenly distribute the oat topping over the spiced apples in the baking dish.

  • Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbly.

  • Serve: Let the apple crisp cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream!

Notes

  • For a gluten-free version, you can substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend and ensure that the oats are certified gluten-free.

  • This dessert is best served warm, but it can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
