Description
This Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich with Mushrooms is a delicious twist on the classic! Thinly sliced ribeye steak, sautéed onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms, all melted with provolone cheese and tucked inside a soft hoagie roll. It’s the perfect savory sandwich for any time of day.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1.5 pounds (680 grams) ribeye steak, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 8 ounces (225 grams) mushrooms (such as cremini or button), sliced
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 8 slices provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- Cook the vegetables: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and the mushrooms are browned. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Cook the steak: In the same skillet, heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced ribeye steak, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until browned and cooked through. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce.
- Assemble the sandwich: Split the hoagie rolls and spread butter on the cut sides. Toast the rolls in a separate skillet or under the broiler until golden brown.
- Layer the sandwich: On the bottom half of each toasted hoagie roll, layer the cooked steak, followed by the sautéed vegetables. Place 2 slices of provolone cheese over the top.
- Melt the cheese: Return the sandwich to the skillet or broiler to melt the cheese, about 1-2 minutes.
- Serve: Remove from heat, close the sandwich, and serve immediately.
Notes
- You can use other cheeses like American or Swiss, but provolone adds a great flavor.
- For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of hot sauce or some garlic powder to the steak as it cooks.
- You can toast the hoagie rolls in the oven instead of a skillet for more crunch.
