Ingredients
-
1 packet active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 teaspoons)
-
1 1/4 cups warm milk (105–110°F)
-
1/3 cup granulated sugar
-
1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature (1/2 stick)
-
1 large egg, room temperature
-
1 teaspoon kosher salt
-
3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading
-
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
-
Add sugar, softened butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
-
Gradually add flour, 1 cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
-
Knead dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
-
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
-
Punch down dough and roll it out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
-
Cut into 2-inch squares or rounds and place on a greased baking sheet.
-
Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, or until puffy.
-
Preheat oven to 350°F.
-
Bake rolls for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Brush immediately with melted butter and serve warm.
Notes
-
Ensure milk is not too hot to avoid killing the yeast.
-
For extra soft rolls, brush with butter before and after baking.
- These freeze well; reheat in the oven or microwave when ready to serve.
